The New York University men's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the season on Wednesday, a 6-3 setback to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
The Violets (0-1) put up two singles victories behind junior
Raphael Namias and freshman
Steven Wu. Namias and senior
Alex Stoler also notched a doubles victory for NYU.
Namias, who was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week on Oct. 4, was the star for the Violets once again. He posted a thrilling 6-7 (7), 6-2, 7-5 victory over Ben Guzick of Vassar at #2 singles. Wu prevailed 7-5, 6-4 over Josh Jasso in #5 singles play.
At #1 singles, Violet sophomore
Connor Witty fell 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), while freshman
Bowen Xu lost a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 decision in the #4 slot.
After falling behind 0-2 in doubles action, Namias and Stoler won 8-5 at #2 doubles.
"We went down 2-4 early today, but Steven brought us to 3-4," said NYU head coach
Horace Choy. "After that, both squads made some adjustments and Vassar came out on top, but we competed hard."
The Violets return to the court in February to start their spring semester slate.
