The New York University men's swimming & diving team was looking for revenge against visitor The College of New Jersey on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Palladium Athletic Facility. The opposition gave the Violets (6-4) no such opportunity, however, topping NYU 179-116.
Saturday was also Family and Senior Day for the Violet squad. Senior Eric Pcholinski was among four seniors honored before the meet, along with Mike Traynor, Andrew Diaz and diver George Loomis III.
Pcholinski went on to post the only two victories for NYU, besting the field in the 50 freestyle (21.74) and the 100 freestyle (47.31).
Depth was a factor early into the meet, as NYU did not place a swimmer in the top three in the 1,000 freestyle, the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. A string of high finishes, however, followed for the Violets.
Sophomore Bryson Naylor claimed second place in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.91) and third place in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.34). James Bedell was another contributor, adding second and third-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (53.48) and the 100 freestyle (48.59), respectively.
"We swam a little flat today," said NYU head coach Bob Sorensen. "Depth was certainly a factor, but so was focus. We were looking too far forward, eying the University Athletic Association Championships in a couple of weeks."
On the diving board, junior Max Norris was victorious in both events. He posted a total of 274.73 in the one-meter dive, and tallied an NCAA-qualifying and season-high score of 312.61 in the three-meter dive. Freshman Jarrod Brodsky posted a third-place total of 232.35 in the one-meter event.
"Max is starting to step up to the level of top-notch national competition," said NYU diving coach Scott Donie."
The Violets look to bounce back next week when they travel to Vassar College on Saturday, Jan. 30. That is the final dual-meet of the season for NYU.
