Box Score

New York University held a five-point, second-half advantage, but went cold down the stretch and could not hold off the University of Chicago, suffering a 65-58 loss to its University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Friday night in the Windy City.

Jake Kinsella netted 17 of his 20 points in the second half, producing 13 consecutive Maroons' tallies in one sequence, as Chicago (7-6, 1-1 UAA) hit 16 of its 23 free-throw attempts (69.6%), including 12 of 16 after halftime, to snap the Violets' (10-3, 1-1 UAA) seven-game win streak.

After missing seven of its first eight shots at the outset and eventually falling behind 18-10, NYU tied the game twice before heading into halftime down 31-27. Five different players converted three-point shots to get the Violets within striking distance. Andy Stein, who finished with a team-high 17 points, paced the visitors with six points and four boards in the opening period.

Five different players scored to start the second half, including three-pointers by Stein and Omar Meziab (12 points, career-best 7 assists), to give the Violets a 38-33 lead with 15:20 remaining.

From there, Kinsella and Steve Stefanou (16 points, 14 rebounds) combined to carry the Chicago offense. Mostly, it was Kinsella who sparked the comeback, hitting a deep three-pointer, two free throws and a lay-up to put the Maroons ahead, 54-50, with 5:33 remaining.

Lay-ups by Carl Yaffe (11 points) and Richie Polan got NYU within two points twice, but the Maroons used their free-throw shooting and strong perimeter shooting -- the Violets shot 36.2% (21-for-58) overall, but hit just seven of their 28 three-point attempts -- to pull away.

Chicago hit 41.2% (21-for-51) of its shots and owned a 39-35 rebounding edge. The Violets shot just 9-for-17 at the charity stripe (9-for-17).

NYU will conclude its Midwestern swing Sunday when it treks to St. Louis for a 1 p.m. matchup (noon CST) against two-time defending NCAA Division III National Champion and #3-ranked Washington University.
