Box Score
Solid games from John Mish and Richie Polan were not enough to help New York University rally in Sunday's 74-69 loss to the University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) men's basketball action at the Ratner Athletic Center in Chicago.
Mish went 9-for-11 from the floor and finished with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Polan contributed 17 tallies, seven caroms and three assists for the Violets (13-7, 2-7 UAA). Omar Meziab buried four three-pointers and added 12 points for NYU, which shot 57.1% (16-for-28) in the second half and 46.3% (25-for-54) overall.
John Kinsella led all scorers with 27 points for Chicago (4-16, 4-5 UAA), but got supporting help from Adam Machones (17 points, 8 rebounds) and Jake Pancratz (16 tallies, 5 assists).
NYU trailed the entire contest, but pulled within 67-65 after a low-post conversion by Mish with 4:37 remaining. However, the Violets went the next 4:11.3 without producing a point.
As it was, NYU spent the entire game trying to come back after Chicago scored the first eight points of the afternoon. Kinsella started the Maroons off and running, scoring seven of his game-high 27 points at the outset, including two three-pointers as the victors went 12-for-24 from long distance.
Eventually, the Violets pulled within 17-14, but a 15-6 run gave Chicago a 32-20 cushion before it took a 35-27 lead into the locker room thanks to 16 first-half tallies from Kinsella.
NYU pulled within 37-34 to start the second half after a short jumper by Polan, but widened their advantaged to 62-52 before the Violets spun off 13 of the next 18 points, including five from Mish, to get within 67-65.
NYU shot 26.1% (6-for-23) from three-point range, hit 65.0% (13-for-20) of its free-throw attempts, owned a 29-28 rebounding edge and committed a season-low 10 turnovers.
Chicago shot 46.8% (22-for-47) from the field and hit 75.0% (18-for-24) of its charity-stripe tries.
