Powered by double-doubles from D.J. Glavan and John Mish, the New York University men's basketball team pushed past University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Case Western Reserve University, 80-63, before 1,893 on Friday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
Glavan recorded his first career double-double, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Mish's 18 tallies, 10 boards and four blocks increased his double-double total to 10 this season for the Violets (15-8, 4-9 UAA).
“Besides what he did on the offensive end, he's assigned to play one of their top scorers and their top ball-handler,” NYU head coach Joe Nesci said of Glavan. “On top of everything D.J. did on the offensive end, he really made his guy work.”
Overall, the Violets put four players in double digits, as Keith Jensen (16 points) and Richie Polan (14 tallies, five boards) also enjoyed strong performances.
Propelled by the two-man show of Mish and Polan, the Violets used a 17-7 run to turn a 40-35 halftime lead into a 57-42 cushion with 12:57 remaining in regulation. Mish produced eight points during the surge, while Polan tallied seven.
When it was all said and done, NYU continued its recent trend of proficient offensive play by producing its second 80-point output in three contests, not to mention its third consecutive contest of shooting better than 52 percent. The Violets shot 53.3% (32-for-60) from the floor.
“Our execution has been good,” Nesci said. “It's just now that we're making more shots. We're getting the shots we want and we're making them.”
Conversely, Case Western Reserve (7-16, 4-8 UAA) shot 40.9% (27-for-66). Tom Summers posted a double-double with a game-high 22 points and 10 boards, while Kevin Herring, whom Glavan guarded, tallied 13 points.
NYU returns to the hardwood Sunday, Feb. 22, when it hosts UAA rival Emory University. Tip-off time is slated for 11 a.m.
