Natalie Garbie scored 19 of her game-high 21 points after halftime as Mount St. Mary College overcame a scoreless streak of 12:10 to upend nationally ranked New York University, 58-52, Monday evening at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
In addition to snapping NYU's (1-1) 48-game, regular-season winning streak against non-conference opponents, the Blue Knights earned just their second victory in 17 tries against the Violets, who are ranked #19 in the D3Hoops.com Top 25 and #22 in the USA Today ESPN Division III Coaches Poll. Their previous victory over the Violets was a 71-65, overtime decision on Dec. 10, 2002.
Hailey Kimball scored a team- and career-high 13 points for NYU, which suffered its first regular-season, non-conference setback since a 70-68 loss to Baruch College on Dec. 15, 2004.
NYU held the Blue Knights scoreless for the final 10:46 of the first half, but only scored nine points during that stretch to take a 21-13 lead into intermission. Before Kate Hartnett's (9 rebounds, 4 assists) lay-up pulled the Blue Knights within 24-15 with 18:36 remaining, they had missed 13 straight shots while turning the ball over eight times.
From floundering offensively, Mount St. Mary found fresh life with a 17-4 surge as Garbie buried two three-pointers as part of her eight-point effort that helped the visitors claim a 49-43 lead with 4:20 remaining.
Despite shooting just 27.5% (14-for-51) and committing 24 turnovers, the Violets pulled within 51-50 with 1:21 remaining when Erica Franke canned her first career trey. However, the Blue Knights answered in short order when Garbie swished a three-ball with :49 remaining to ice the victory.
Mount St. Mary shot 44.1% (15-for-34) in the second half, including 5-for-10 from long distance, and finished the contest hitting 33.3% (21-for-63) of its shots. Amanda Horvers (13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) and Chrissy Zrowka (10 points) also reached double digits for the Blue Knights, who owned a 44-41 rebounding advantage.
Tana Bertino scored a career-high eight points and Emily Foshag also added eight points, six rebounds and four steals for the Violets,
The Violets are off until Friday, Nov. 20, when they host the College of Mount St. Vincent at 6 p.m. in a NYU Tip-Off Tournament first-round game. Lehman College and Purchase College will play the other Tip-Off Tournament first-round contest at 8 p.m.
