The New York University men's swimming & diving team powered its way to victory at the University of Rochester Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 31. NYU topped host Rochester 223-166 and Case Western Reserve University 230-159.

NYU led University Athletic Association (UAA) foes Rochester 61-60 and Case Western 66-55 after one day of competition. But on Saturday, the Violets took command of the pool.

Freshman Kevin Silberman raced to first-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (4:51.24) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:04.64). He also swam a leg of the victorious 200 freestyle relay (1:27.99) along with Eric Pcholinski, Bryson Naylor, and James Bedell. On Friday, Silberman claimed the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:46.29 and swam the anchor leg of the first-place 400 freestyle relay (3:15.67).

Naylor won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with times of 1:01.03 and 2:13.40, respectively. The sophomore also swam on the first-place 800 freestyle relay (7:20.68).

Junior captain Andy King and sophomore James Bedell also helped lead the NYU charge. King won the 200 individual medley in 2:00.98 and the 400 individual medley in 4:19.99, while Bedell had  winning times of 1:47.32 in the 200 freestyle and 47.70 in the 100 freestyle. Bedell also swam a leg of the first-place 400 freestyle relay.

“I was very happy with our performance,” said NYU head coach Bob Sorensen. “We swam great today and I hope we progress like this all year.”

On the diving board, junior Max Norris, who did not compete on Friday, dazzled his hometown of Rochester. His first-place score of 283.80 in the three-meter dive fell just short of NCAA qualification standards. Freshman Jeffrey Bubley followed Friday's first-place performance in the one-meter dive with a third-place score of 210.10 in the three-meter dive.

Diving coach Scott Donie was pleased with the performances of both the men's and women's divers.

“Everybody looked great,” said Donie. “We have some work to do, but we're headed back home to get it done.”

NYU will now turn its attention to Rowan University, who the Violets topped 131-107 a season ago. The Violets host Rowan on Saturday, Nov. 7, at NYU's Palladium Athletic Facility.
