NYU Invitational Results
The New York University men's swimming & diving team defeated SUNY New Paltz and lost to Stevens Institute of Technology at the NYU Invitational on Saturday Oct. 24, at the Palladium Athletic Facility Natatorium. The Violets topped SUNY 85-37, but dropped a 77-43 decision to Stevens.
NYU was led by stand-out performances from James Bedell, Andy King and Bryson Naylor.
Bedell, a sophomore, took first in the 100 freestyle (48.30) and the 100 butterfly (53.41). and led off the first-place 400 freestyle relay (3:14.78). King, a junior captain, showed his versatility by garnering third-place finishes in the 1,000 freestyle (10:14.60), the 100 breaststroke (1:02.16) and the 200 individual medley (2:04.52). Naylor, a sophomore, took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.97) and swam a leg of the first-place 400 freestyle relay.
Eric Pcholinski, a senior, was also on the 400 freestyle relay, and won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.19.
“Today also gave me a chance to see what our freshmen can do,” said NYU head coach Bob Sorensen.
The talented freshmen proved their worth, with Kevin Silberman taking third in the 500 freestyle (4:56.76), Greg Jacobs finishing third in the 200 backstroke (2:06.48) and Ross Gormley posting a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:05.74).
Junior Max Norris, qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on March 17, in Minneapolis, MN, with a score of 301.50 in the three-meter dive. Diving coach Scott Donie also noted the impact of freshmen Jeffrey Bubley and JoJo Nwoko.
“They all showed great promise for the future of NYU diving,” Donie said.
The Violets return to the pool on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31, when they compete at the University of Rochester Invitational along with Case Western Reserve University.
