A sluggish start, combined with torrid three-point shooting by Brandeis University, proved costly as the New York Univeristy men's basketball team dropped a 65-35 decision to it sUniversity Athletic Association (UAA) rival Saturday afternoon at Red Auerbach Arena in Waltham, MA.
The Violets dropped to 10-3 overall and 0-3 in the UAA, while the Judges improved to 8-5 and 2-1 in Association play.
In the first half, Brandeis hit eight of its first nine three-point attempts, inclduing three straight at the outset to claim a 9-0 lead. All told, the Judges went 8-for-10 from beyond the arc and, despite, going just 2-for-13 on their two-point tries, took a 31-14 lead into intermission as NYU shot just 22.7% (5-for-22).
Overall, Brandeis shot 47.1% (24-for-51) from the field, including a robust 65.0% (13-for-20) from long range as Kevin Olson (15 points, 5-for-5 3FG) and Kenny Small (13 points, 3-for-3 FG) led the way.
Andy Stein led NYU with seven points and five rebounds. The Violets, who had 11 different players score, hit only 25.5% (13-for-51) of their shots, including just 3-for-23 (13.0%) from downtown.
NYU returns to action Monday, Jan. 19, for its annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Day game against Hunter College at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan. Tip-off time is 8 p.m.
