Men's Tennis Edged in Season Opener

Patrick Whitner won his #1 singles and doubles matches.

The New York University men's tennis team fell 5-4 in a close match with Vassar College on Sept. 17 in Poughkeepsie, NY.  Freshman Patrick Whitner had an excellent debut for the Violets, winning at #1 singles and also claiming a #1 doubles win with teammate, sophomore Alex Stoler.

Whitner won his singles match over Vassar's Mike Mattleson with scores of 7-5, and 6-4. In doubles, Whitner and Stoler defeated Max Willner and Greg Katz 8-3.

Stoler also won his singles match, topping Vassar's Jeremy Rosen 6-4 and 6-2, while junior P.J. Marranca won his against Josh Jasso 7-6(3), 6-4.

The Violets were up 4-3 with two matches still undecided.  However, with the match tied 4-4, senior Calvin Chou faced Vassar's Willner,  took the first set 6-3, but fell in the final two by scores of 6-2 and 6-1.

Though NYU was edged in the match, Violets' head coach Horace Choy was encouraged by what he saw.

" I was very happy with the newcomers, especially Pat and Alex as doubles," Choy said after the match. "Pat also won first signles in straight sets so I was very pleased. All of our guys hung in there and fought hard."

Up  next, the Violets will compete in the ECAC Championships from Sept. 20-21 at Trinity College in Hartford, CT.
