Keith Jensen tallied a game- and season-high 20 points as New York University overcame the New York City College of Technology, 67-60, in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
Jensen shot 8-for-11 from the field and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc as the Violets (5-0), who shot 58.8% (10-for-17) from three-point range, led 40-28 with 16:26 remaining before holding off a late charge by the Yellow Jackets (3-4).
John Mish added 16 points and eight rebounds, while D.J. Glavan tallied 10 points and doled out five assists as NYU shot 50.0% (25-for-50) from the field.
Jamaal Hall led City Tech with 16 points, while James Abrams poured in 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Yvon Dantes added 12 points for the Yellow Jackets, who shot 44.1% (26-for-59) from the floor, but just 33.3% (8 of 24) from beyond the arc and missed their only free-throw attempt in the contest.
NYU led 64-53 with 3:58 to go after Glavan buried a trey off a feed from Zachary Kuba (six points, four assists), but City Tech pulled within six twice down the stretch, the last time after a lay-up by Gabriel Davis with 1:02 remaining. A free throw by Mish, however, put the Violets ahead 67-60 with :43 remaining.
The Violets needed to do an aboutface face after trailing 17-9 following a Hall jumper with 10:34 remaining in the first half. City Tech led 26-22 before NYU found a comfort level against the Yellow Jackets' zone, using a 14-2 run powered by five different scorers, including four points from Jensen, to take a 36-28 halftime lead.
"I thought we did enough to win," NYU head coach Joe Nesci said. "We made key baskets when we needed them, especially the threes."
NYU is off until next Saturday, Dec. 6, when it travels to Hoboken, NJ, to face the Stevens Institute of Technology at 4 p.m.
