Former All-American grappler Stephen Hult is in his second year as an assistant coach of the New York University wrestling program after coming on board prior to the 2008-09 season. His responsibilities include strength and conditioning for the middle weights, teaching technique and preparing the wrestlers both physically and mentally.
During his initial campaign on the staff, the grapplers posted a 10-7 record and finished second at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in 2008-09. In addition, sophomore Gregg Martino (141 pounds) qualified for the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships
“Having another NYU alum and former All-American coaching helps us on many different levels,” said NYU head coach Bruce Haberli. “Steve helps us technically, mentally and psychologically. He’s done it all. It’s also good for our recruits to see NYU alums returning as coaches.”
A 2008 graduate of NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, Hult finished third in the 141-pound weight class at the 2008 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, the highest finish ever for a NYU grappler. He qualified for the nationals after winning his weight class at the Metropolitan Conference Championship.
Hult, who helped the team capture the University Athletic Association (UAA) title as a senior in 2007-08, went 22-3 in his final season to finish his career with a 97-23 mark.
Hult burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2003-04, winning the 149-pound class en route to being named the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragon Invitational Most Outstanding Wrestler.
After taking the 2004-05 season off, Hult returned for his junior year in 2005-06, qualified for the NCAA Championships and was selected the UAA’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
After battling injuries in 2006-07, Hult returned in 2007-08 and posted one of the finest seasons in NYU wrestling history.
Hult is a native and resident of Hillsdale, NJ.
