Shawn Swift

Shawn Swift is in his third season as an assistant wrestling coach at New York University. He assists Head Coach Bruce Haberli with NYU’s recruiting efforts, daily practicing and training, and in-match coaching. Swift is also responsible for creating, implementing and overseeing specialized in- and out-of-season strength and conditioning programs.

Last season, Swift helped NYU capture the fifth University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in program history and post a 12-9 record in dual meets. A total of five grapplers won UAA crowns in their respective weight classes, while David Rice (165 pounds) was named UAA Most Outstanding Wrestler. For their efforts, Swift, Head Coach Bruce Haberli and the rest of the assistants were selected the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.

In his first season at NYU, Swift helped the team finish 9-10 in dual meets. A total of five NYU wrestlers won UAA crowns – the most of the three UAA squads – as the team missed out on the Association Championship by just one point in the decisive dual meet. In addition, Matt Magill made his second straight trip to the NCAA Division III Championships and became just the fifth NYU wrestler to reach 100 career victories.

Prior to his arrival at NYU, Swift served as an assistant coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy from 2004-08. During his time with the Mariners, he coached the school’s first national qualifier in over five decades; coached the first Division III All-American in school history; helped bring in one of the top three recruiting classes in Division III in 2007 according to USA Wrestling; and helped produce an All-Conference athlete in all 10 weight classes and a national qualifier in eight weight classes in 2008.

A 2004 magna cum laude graduate of C.W. Post-Long Island University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a minor in sociology, Swift was the top-ranked wrestler at 174 in Division III of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) while attending Nassau Community College. He was named an All-American in 2003 at Nassau before transferring to Hofstra University and then finishing his studies at C.W. Post.

Swift co-owns Fitness and Wellness Clubs in Jericho, Lindenhurst, Northport, and Patchogue, NY, and oversees all operations at the Jericho location. In May 2012, he completed a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in healthcare management at NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

Swift is a native and resident of Albertson, NY.
