Doug Lennox is in his second season as an assistant coach with the New York University men’s and women’s swimming teams. He works primarily with all groups/swimmers in the pool and assists with the program’s recruiting efforts.
In his first season at NYU, Lennox helped lead both programs to successful campaigns, as each posted identical 6-2 dual meet records. The women’s squad captured first place at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships and finished fifth at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships. The Violet men recorded their second consecutive second-place ECAC finish and placed sixth at the UAA’s.
The 2013-14 season also saw NYU’s athletes rewrite the team’s record books. On the men’s side, senior Charlie Wu established new marks for both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke, while junior Matt Kendall set the record for the 200-yard breaststroke. Wu and Kendall also teamed with freshman Daniel Tay and junior Jerry Crowley to establish records for the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays, while freshman Jason Bo set a new standard for the 200-yard butterfly and junior Austen Blease set the Violet mark for the one-meter dive (11).
On the women’s side, junior Emily Doerner earned All-America honors with her eighth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships. She also established new school records in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke, and combined with sophomore Krista Traub and freshmen Katie Webber and Elise Gibbs to set records in the 200-yard medley, 400-yard medley, 200-yard free, and 400-yard free relays. Webber also set a new standard for the 200-yard breaststroke, while freshmen divers Ashley Pankonin and Nia Sorgente established new marks for the one-meter dive (6) and three-meter dive (6), respectively.
In addition to his responsibilities at NYU, Lennox is also an assistant coach with Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) where he works primarily with 6-10-year old children, the national age group team and the AGUA Masters team.
Lennox began coaching after an extremely successful swimming career. A member of the Puerto Rico National Swim Team from 2006-10, he competed at both the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2009 World Championships and owns national records for both the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle.
A 2009 graduate of Princeton University with an Artium Baccalaureatus degree in anthropology, Lennox was an accomplished member of the Tigers’ swim team. He established 10 school records and seven Ivy League records, while also capturing eight Ivy League Championships and recording three top-10 finishes at the NCAA Division I Championships. Lennox, who was voted Princeton’s Male Athlete of the Year by the Daily Princetonian as a senior, was also named the 10th-best Male Athlete of the 2000’s by the Princeton Department of Athletics and received the William Winston Roper Award for “demonstrating commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics.”
Lennox has continued to swim competitively as a member of the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) Swim Team. He also competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle.
In addition to his swimming experience, Lennox has also worked with Teach for America as a kindergarten and first-grade teacher at Uncommon Schools-Leadership Prep in Brooklyn, NY.
A native of Lake Forest, IL, Lennox resides in the East Village of Manhattan.
