Todd Spenla is in his fifth year as an assistant golf coach of the New York University men’s and women’s golf teams, having joined the staff prior to the 2007-08 season. Along with assisting during practice sessions and at competitions, Spenla also helps in overall player skill development and in the day-to-day operations of the NYU golf program.
The 2010-11 women’s team won its first team title in program history (in just their fourth year as a varsity program) at the ECAC Division II/III Championship and climbed to as high as #9 in the national rankings. The squad added another team title at the McDaniel Spring Invitational and ended the season ranked #16 in both the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division III Top 25 Poll and the Golfstat.com head-to-head computer rankings.
The men’s squad also had a successful season in ’10-11. The Violets placed second at the ECAC Division III Metro/Upstate Championship and posted nine top-five finishes. The squad took fourth place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship as freshman Kyle Demshki earned Second Team All-UAA honors with his eighth-place individual finish.
In 2009-10, Spenla helped lead the men’s team to its first-ever UAA Championship. The squad never finished any lower than fifth place in its nine tournaments, including two victories at the Johnson & Wales Invitational and the UAA Championship (which came on consecutive weekends to close the season).
For their success, Spenla, head coach Todd Kolean and the entire NYU staff earned UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
Spenla came to NYU with an impressive background in the game. At Riverview High School in Sarasota, FL, he was the top-ranked golfer in the state and received over 30 letters of intent from different colleges and universities. Spenla won the state championship while there and recorded the lowest nine-hole score (31) in Sarasota County.
Spenla went on to attend Florida State University (1985-87) on a full golf scholarship before transferring to Santa Barbara City College (1988-90), also on a full scholarship.
Playing in various tournaments on California’s Golden State Tour, Spenla served as the assistant golf professional at the Valley Club in Santa Barbara, CA, from 1988-91, and at the Riviera Golf Club in Los Angeles as the assistant golf professional from 1991-93. His responsibilities during that time included organizing corporate tournaments, as well as other administrative duties.
A partner and co-founder of Microbanc, Inc, a New York-based private equity firm, Spenla is a native of Sarasota and currently resides in Manhattan.
