January Romero
Men’s and Women’s Golf Assistant Coach
Hired by New York University in June 2009 as an assistant men’s and women’s golf coach, January Romero is in her fourth season with the Violets’ programs.
Romero helped the women to another strong campaign last year despite graduating the program’s all-time leader in virtually every individual statistical category. The Violets posted the second-lowest team scoring average in school history (348.68) and placed second at two tournaments – the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II/III Championship and the McDaniel Spring Invitational. NYU also finished fifth at the prestigious Jack Leaman Championship and earned its first invitations to the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational and the Williams Spring Invitational, two of the most competitive tournaments in the nation.
Individually, sophomore Kristina Shalhoup tied her own team record by shooting two rounds of 74, while her season average of 81.84 was second lowest in team annals.
The Violet men also had a strong season in 2011-12 with Romero’s help, tying for fourth at the ECAC Division III Metro/Upstate Championship and taking seventh at the St. Lawrence University Invitational.
The 2010-11 women’s team won its first team title in program history (in just its fourth year as a varsity program) at the ECAC Division II/III Championship and climbed to as high as #9 in the national rankings. The squad added another team title at the McDaniel Spring Invitational and ended the season ranked #16 in both the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division III Top 25 Poll and the Golfstat.com head-to-head computer rankings.
The men’s squad also had a successful season in ’10-11, placing second at the ECAC Division III Metro/Upstate Championship and posting nine top-five finishes. The squad took fourth place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship as freshman Kyle Demshki earned Second Team All-UAA honors with his eighth-place individual finish.
In her rookie season with the teams in 2009-10, Romero helped lead the men to their first-ever UAA Championship. The Violets also won the Johnson & Wales Invitational and never finished lower than fifth in any of their nine tournaments.
For their success, Romero, Head Coach Todd Kolean and the entire NYU staff earned UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
A 2006 graduate of Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science, Romero is currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration degree at NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
A four-year member and four-time All-Ivy League honoree as part of Yale’s golf team, Romero served as captain during her senior campaign. Career highlights included winning the William & Mary Invitational by six strokes as a sophomore, placing second at the Lady Hoya Invitational at Georgetown University as a senior and at the Ivy League Championship as a freshman (she finished third in each of her final three seasons). As a junior, Romero set the team record with a two-round total of 145 (76-69) at William & Mary. As a senior, Romero received the Widdy Neal Award for “demonstrated leadership and largest contribution” to the women’s golf team.
A native of Albuquerque, NM, Romero was honored on June 29, 2008, with a proclamation by then-Mayor Jim Baca of Albuquerque on “January Romero Day.” The Fraternal Order of Police and New Mexico Peace Officers Association also honored Romero for her involvement “in working with underprivileged children and being a role model.”
Romero is a resident of New York City.
