Alex Sourimto

Alex Sourimto joined the New York University fencing staff as an assistant coach in October 2024. He works mainly with the team’s saber fencers.

In his first season in 2024-25, both the men’s (20-11) and women’s (21-12) teams produced 20-win seasons (the most wins in women’s team history), and the teams combined for a 21st-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Two fencers, Maria Stamos and Anup Banerjee, represented NYU at the NCAA’s.

The men’s campaign included victories over NCAA Division I squads from Penn State University, the University of North Carolina, and Duke University, while the women recorded wins against DI teams North Carolina, the University of Notre Dame, Boston University, and Lafayette College.

Both squads were well-represented in postseason awards from the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA), with Banerjee being selected National Foil Newcomer of the Year. He also received similar “Newcomer of the Year” accolades on the Division III level, as did teammates Ajit Sivakumar (epee) and Ansh Ghayalod (sabre). On the women’s side, Stamos was chosen DIII Foil Athlete of the Year and Katherine Chen received similar accolades in epee.

Sourimto is a seasoned fencer with 17 years of competitive experience under his belt and a decorated seven-year member of the Belarus National Team (1996 to 2003), where he won the 1996 Cadet World Championship and 1998 Junior Europe Championship. He also won the Fencing National Championship Republic of Belarus once individually and five times as a team member between 1998 and 2003.

In 2002, Sourimto graduated from the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture and Sports.

Sourimto worked as a coach for the Belarusian National Team from 2005-15. His fencers have been finalists at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics and winners at the Fencing World Cup, European and World Championships. He most recently worked at the Manhattan Fencing Center as a saber coach, joining in 2017.

Sourimto moved to the United States and to the Ohio State University fencing team in 2015 in an assistant coach capacity as the Buckeyes took fifth place at the NCAA Championships in 2014-15 and was second in 2015-16.

A native of Minsk, Belarus, Sourimto resides in Clark, NJ.
