Chiene Joy Jones
Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach

Having returned to her alma mater in 2008-09, Chiene Joy Jones is in her fourth season as an assistant coach with the New York University women’s basketball program. A former standout for the Violets, Jones has helped NYU compile a 51-30 (.630) record during her time on the sidelines.

In 2010-11, NYU posted a 12-13 record and a 6-8 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The squad defeated three teams that went on to reach the NCAA Division III Championship and made history from the free-throw line, breaking the UAA record for free-throw percentage in Association play (79.9%).

In 2009-10, the Violets went 16-12 overall with a 5-9 mark in the UAA. The season was capped by a 54-51 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology in the finals of the ECAC Division III Metro Tournament.

In her first season as an assistant coach, Jones helped NYU advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Championship and finish the season ranked nationally in both the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll (#14) and in the USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches Rankings (#16).

A psychology major who attended NYU’s College of Arts and Science, Jones played for the Violets from 2000-02, and then again from 2004-06. During her two-year absence from the team, she worked full-time at the NYU Child Study Center, which is the nation’s leading academic department for research, prevention and treatment of child and adolescent psychiatric and learning disorders.

In her career with the Violets, Jones served as a leader both on and off the court. During her sophomore campaign, she led the UAA in steals with 83 and finished eighth in assists, also with 83.

Jones served as a co-captain in her final season, and as a junior was one of two NYU varsity athletes selected to serve on the prestigious Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She played on two NCAA Tournament teams during her NYU career, including the 2000-01 squad that reached the Elite Eight.

During her senior year, Jones was an integral part in creating NYU’s Tear It Up! program. Tear It Up! events take place at designated varsity competitions, providing giveaways, free food, raffles, contests, and cheering sections for students, and have become a tradition in the NYU community.

Jones is noted for her devotion to the community and giving back to New York City basketball. She is an active mentor for The Children’s Storefront Women’s Mentoring Group and an annual participant in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York 4K Run for Kids. Jones is also the Head Coach for the Riverside Hawks 13U girls’ basketball team in Harlem and volunteers each year as a community basketball coach for the LL Cool J Jump and Ball Basketball Tournament in St. Albans, Queens.

Jones is a native and resident of Briarwood, NY.
