The 2006-07 season will mark Bob Sorensen’s 27th as head coach of the New York University men’s swimming & diving team. During his tenure, Sorensen’s teams have compiled a 156-109 overall record. He has coached 18 NCAA qualifiers and 12 NCAA Division III All-Americans.
Sorensen’s team posted another winning season in ’05-06, finishing 8-1 in dual meets. The Violets captured their second-consecutive Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC) Championship and finished a best-ever second at the University Athletic Association Championships. During the season, Sorensen was named the ECAC Championships Coach of the Meet and, along with his assistants, was selected UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.
Individually, seniors Daniel Curiale and John Keyes, sophomore Brad Thornton, and freshmen Paul Hogan, Andrew Lardiere and Eric Wang earned All-America or Honorable Mention All-America accolades. Freshman Jeffrey Fine, Keyes, Curiale, Thornton, and Lardiere each earned Second and Third Team All-UAA honors. Hogan was a Second Team All-UAA selection, while sophomores Thomas Eason, Matthew Ferreira and Andrew Guyton, and Wang were Third Team All-UAA honorees. Wang was also named ECAC Swimmer of the Meet. Senior diver David Osborne earned Second Team All-UAA honors in both the one- and three-meter dives.
In addition, 11 of Sorensen’s athletes received UAA Winter Sport All-Academic honors in ’05-06.
“NYU is a rising Division III program,” Sorensen states. “We hope to crack the top-10 at the NCAA Championships within the next few years.”
Sorensen began his coaching career at the Boy’s Club of Queens, and two years later became coach at Mater Christi High School, his alma mater. While there, Sorensen also served as an assistant coach at the Flushing YMCA. He has also served as President and Vice President of the Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming Conference.
In addition to his coaching duties at NYU, Sorensen serves as the Natatorium Manager for the Palladium Athletic Facility on East 14th Street. He instructs classes in swimming, lifeguard training, CPR, and First Aid.
A 1974 graduate of St. John’s University with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Sorensen co-captained their swim team and was a metropolitan champion in the 200-yard butterfly. He also holds a master’s degree in physical education from Columbia University.
A native of Astoria, NY, Sorensen and his family currently reside in Brooklyn, NY.
