The 2004-05 season marked Bob Sorensen’s 25th as head coach of the New York University men’s swimming & diving team. During his tenure, Sorensen’s teams have compiled a 148-108 overall record. He has coached 15 NCAA qualifiers and nine NCAA Division III All-Americans.
Sorensen’s team posted another winning season in ’04-05, finishing 9-2 in dual meets. The Violets captured their first-ever ECAC Winter Championships and Sorensen was named Coach of the Meet.
Individually, senior Matt Cull earned All-America honors for the fourth consecutive year, finishing 10th in the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA Championships. Cull was also a Third Team All-University Athletic Association selection. Freshmen Elliot Bishow, Thomas Eason, Andrew Guyton, and Brad Thornton joined Cull as Third Team All-UAA selections, while freshman diver Daniel Volpa earned Second Team All-UAA honors and was also named ECAC Winter Championships Diver of the Meet.
In addition, nine of Sorensen’s athletes received UAA Winter Sport All-Academic honors, while the team`s GPA (3.44) was the highest of any NYU men`s varsity team for the spring 2005 semester.
Sorensen began his coaching career at the Boy’s Club of Queens, and two years later became coach at Mater Christi High School, his alma mater. While there, Sorensen also served as an assistant coach at the Flushing YMCA. He has also served as President and Vice President of the Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming Conference.
In addition to his coaching duties at NYU, Sorensen serves as the Natatorium Manager for the Palladium Athletic Facility on East 14th Street. He instructs classes in swimming, lifeguard training, CPR, and First Aid.
A 1974 graduate of St. John’s University with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Sorensen co-captained their swim team and was a metropolitan champion in the 200-yard butterfly. He also holds a master’s degree in physical education from Columbia University.
A native of Astoria, NY, Sorensen and his family currently reside in Brooklyn, NY.
