NYU Athletics Announces Hall of Fame Class of 2013

The New York University Department of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation is pleased to announce the Hall of Fame Class of 2013. The group of four inductees will be formally recognized at the annual NYU Induction Ceremony on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the Kimmel Center for University Life. This year's class is comprised of Katya Khmelnitskaya (women's volleyball, Class of 2006); George Savarese (football, Class of 1938); Jason Snow (wrestling, Class of 2002); and Dr. Orrin Sherman (NYU Athletics Head Team Physician and Contributor).

“We are thrilled with the final selections for the 2013 NYU Athletics Hall of Fame class," said Senior Associate Director of Athletics Janice Quinn. "The four newest inductees are robust examples of all that is great with NYU Athletics' long and distinguished history. Each class is quite unique, and this one is no exception."

The formal induction of these outstanding individuals will be followed by a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres reception overlooking Washington Square Park. NYU Athletics invites friends and family members, alumni of NYU and members of the community to join us for this exciting event! To reserve your ticket, please contact Cassidy Dadaos at athletics.events@nyu.edu or call 212.998.2029.

The Hall of Fame Class of 2013

Katya Khmelnitskaya
A 2006 graduate of the College of Arts and Science, Khmelnitskaya brought NYU women's volleyball to national prominence. The 2002 UAA Rookie of the Year and 2003 UAA Player of the Year, Khmelnitskaya led her squad to three straight Division III Elite Eight appearances, back-to-back Final Four appearances and the NCAA Division III National Championship Match in 2003.

George Savarese
A 1938 Steinhardt graduate, Savarese led NYU football through some of its most successful years. He was dubbed "Stonecutter Savarese" by the New York Times after being the only player to score a touchdown against Fordham's infamous “Seven Blocks of Granite" in 1936. An All-America mention at halfback in 1936, Savarese started his college football career as the high scorer on the undefeated 1934 NYU freshman team.

Jason Snow
Snow recorded 123 career wins at NYU, the second most in the history of the wrestling program. NYU's first and only four-time UAA Champion, Snow still holds the record for career falls. The 2002 graduate of the College of Arts and Science capped an outstanding senior year by earning the 2002 NYU MVP award.

Dr. Orrin Sherman
Dr. Orrin Sherman held the challenging position of NYU Athletics Head Team Physician for close to two decades. Thanks to his expertise in the field and his dedication to NYU's programs, the quality of healthcare provided to NYU student-athletes improved greatly during his tenure. Dr. Sherman successfully operated on over 150 student-athletes, while ensuring the health and safety of thousands more during that time.

The current Hall of Fame was established as a result of the merger of NYU Varsity Club Hall of Fame, founded in 1970 to honor members of the men's teams, and the Women's Hall of Fame, founded in 1976 by a group of former female student athletes. The NYU Hall of Fame currently includes 196 distinguished members, spanning more than 100 years of rich athletic history.
