Men's Volleyball Advances to UVC Semifinals

Violets Sweep Cardinals in First Round

The New York University men's volleyball team swept St. John Fisher College in the opening match of the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Tournament on Friday, April 10, in New Paltz, NY.

After the first two sets were decided by four points or less, the Violets dominated the third frame to win 25-21, 25-23, 25-15.

NYU fell behind 4-0 in the opening set, but quickly recovered to cut the deficit to 8-7. The Violets later tied the score at 11-11, but the Cardinals took back control and went up 18-15.

NYU answered with a 10-3 run which consequently closed out the set. Jerry Feng capped off the run with set-clinching kill.

The two teams went back-and-forth for much of the second stanza with neither side being able to gain separation. Up 13-12, NYU scored three consecutive points to take a four-point advantage.

St. John Fisher stayed within striking distance, however, eventually getting even at 23-23. The Violets managed to take the set with back-to-back points and went ahead 2-0.

The Cardinals opened the final set with a 7-6 lead, but a 10-1 NYU run put the Violets ahead for good. NYU's lead reached as high as 11, while St. John Fisher was unable to reduce the gap to less than seven.

Veer Agarwal closed out the match with the kill and sent the Violets to the semifinals.

Emerson Evans led the attack with 16 kills on an astounding .560 hitting percentage. Devyn Nguyen dished out 36 assists and Bennet Tchaikovsky tallied 10 digs.

The Violets will move on to the UVC semifinal where they will take on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Saturday, April 11, at 5pm.
