Softball Opens Series Against Case Western Reserve

Violets Drop First Two Games to Spartans

The New York University softball team played a doubleheader to begin its University Athletic Association (UAA) series against Case Western Reserve University on Friday, April 10, at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx, NY.

The Violets lost both games by scores of 3-2 and 10-6 in games one and two, respectively.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the frontend of the doubleheader with a run in the top of the first.

After CWRU added on with a run in the top of the third, NYU answered in the bottom of the inning on a Nicole Cicchetti sacrifice bunt that brought home Siena Kiefer.

The Violets went on to tie the game in the sixth inning after Carly Nelson knocked in Naya Schubel on an RBI double.

In the following frame, the Spartans had a runner on third with nobody out and brought her in on a double. The run proved to be the game-winning score.

CWRU began the second game in similar fashion with a run in the top of the first.

NYU then took its first lead of the evening in the bottom of the frame. With runners on first and third and one out, a fielder's choice plated Kiefer. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, a dropped fly ball in right field allowed two more runs to come home.

The Spartans quickly tied the game with two runs in the following inning but were followed by three in NYU's half of the stanza.

A Cicchetti RBI single and a Nelson two-run base hit put the Violets up 6-3.

CWRU once again evened the score with three runs in the top of the third.

Neither team was able to score over the next four innings, pushing the game to extra innings. NYU did have the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the sixth but could not convert.

The Spartans finally broke the stalemate with a four-run top of the eighth.

The Violets brought the tying run to the plate in their half of the inning but fell short of a comeback.

Nelson finished batting 3-for-7 with three RBI.

The Violets will close out the series tomorrow at 7:00pm.
