The New York University softball team played in a pair of one-run games on Sunday, falling to Sweet Briar College 6-5, then defeating Randolph College 8-7 to claim its first victory of the young season.
Playing in the Triangle Collegiate Softball Classic in Raleigh, NC, the Violets went 1-3 in their four games.
In the first game on Sunday, the Violets scored two runs in the top of the first on
Naya Schubel's two-run home run, her second in two days.
The Vixens scored four in the bottom of the second, but
Emily Barbire and
Nicole Cicchetti had RBI singles to tie things up in the fourth.
Sweet Briar then scored single runs in the fourth and fifth.
Down 6-4 heading into the seventh, NYU scored an unearned run but left a runner on third to end the game.
Schubel, Cicchetti,
Victoria Katilius, and
Siena Kiefer each had two hits in the game.
Against Randolph, the Violets opened the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the third.
The Wildcats knotted it up with five runs in the top of the fourth, then scored single runs in each of the next two innings.
The Violets tied it with two in the bottom of the sixth on
Carly Nelson's triple, her third hit of the game, and Schubel's sacrifice.
Jessie Werthman held the Wildcats scoreless in the top of the seventh, and NYU registered its first victory of the season on a fielding error in the bottom of the frame.
Kiefer had another two hits in the victory.
The Violets are scheduled to play their first home games of the eason this Tuesday, March 10, when they host St. Joseph's University Brooklyn for a doubleheader starting at 5:00pm at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx, NY.
