NYU Baseball Drops 2026 Season Opener

Violets Fall 10-1 at Swarthmore

The New York University (0-1) baseball team opened the 2026 season with a 10-1 loss versus Swarthmore College (5-2) on Wednesday, March 4, in Swarthmore, PA.

NYU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after Evan Robson's RBI groundout scored Dominic Holton for the Violets' first run of the season. Mason Clark advanced to second on the play but was left on base.

Caden Rothbaum started on the mound for the Violets and was replaced by reliever Cooper Paule after one inning and a third. Brady Scheidt then replaced Paule in the bottom of the fourth.

The Violets held Swarthmore scoreless until Brad Johnston's home run in the bottom of the fifth inning tied the game for the Garnets. Swarthmore scored another five runs during the inning pushing the score to 6-1.

After the fifth inning, the Violets pitched another three players through the remainder of the game.

NYU began the sixth inning with a Kosta Mocklis double, giving last year's First Team All-UAA outfielder his first hit of the season. Four batters later the Violets had bases loaded with two outs, but left all three baserunners stranded to end the half inning.

Swarthmore scored another four runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 10-1.

The Violets completed a double play to end the seventh inning and the game was then called early by the umpire crew due to darkness.

Notable Stats:

  • Freshman Dominic Holton went 2-3 & scored a run in his first career game as a Violet

  • Graduate Student Caden Rothbaum made his Violet debut & didn't allow a run in his 1.1 innings on the mound
