New York University's baseball team (6-7, 1-2) split a doubleheader with Emory University (13-9, 2-1) on Saturday, March 28, in Teaneck, New Jersey. Game one featured five lead changes in an offensive battle. The Violets never trailed on their way to victory in game two.
Game 1: 14-11 Emory University
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom half of the first inning,
Kosta Mocklis opened the scoring for NYU with an RBI double. An RBI single by
Jack Kelman capped off a three run first inning for the Violets.
The Eagles scored three runs the following inning to make the score 4-3.
Evan Robson's two run RBI single in the third quickly gave the lead back to NYU.
Holding a 7-5 lead in the fifth,
Harrison Blueweiss hit a shot over the fence to give the Violets their largest lead of the game.
Emory responded with five runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh to take an 11-8 advantage.
With two runners on,
CJ Franchini hit a single to cut the Eagles' lead to just two at the end of seven innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, trailing 14-9, NYU had bases loaded with two outs.
Dominic Holton then hit a two-run single to get the Violets within three.
But, despite bringing the tying run to the plate, the Violets were unable to capitalize as they fell short in game one.
Game 2: 11-8 New York University
Max Oliviera kicked off NYU's offense in the first inning with his first home run of the season giving NYU an early 2-0 lead.
Emory answered the early deficit with a two-run home run of their own.
Blueweiss hit his second home run of the day to start the third inning scoring for the Violets. NYU led Emory 5-2 after three.
Oliviera continued his success at the plate in the fourth inning by adding two more RBI's to his stat line to extend NYU's lead to 9-2.
In the top half of the fifth the Eagles scored six runs as the momentum swung back to Emory. But, the Violets managed two runs in the bottom half of the frame to make the score 11-8.
Emory's bats went quiet from the seventh inning to the last at-bat as reliever
Tyler Tedeschi came in and only allowed one hit to help NYU walk away with the game-two win.
Notable Stats:
- Blueweiss now has seven career home runs
- Franchini had his third game of the season with at least three hits (game one)
- Tedeschi struck out six batters in just three innings (game two)
- NYU's offense continues to shine as they currently lead the UAA in batting average (.326)
