The New York University softball team opened play at THE Spring Games with contests against Rowan University and SUNY Brockport on Wednesday, March 18, in Bartow, FL.
The Violets lost 11-4 to the Profs before bouncing back with a 25-1 win over the Golden Eagles in the day's second game.
The team's 25 runs against SUNY Brockport are now tied for the most in a single game in program history.
Against Rowan, NYU jumped ahead 1-0 after the first inning following an RBI single by
Emma Sung.
The Profs then scored two runs in the top of the third before the Violets scored three of their own in the bottom of the inning, coming from a two-run single by
Victoria Katilius and an RBI sacrifice fly by
Nicole Cicchetti.
NYU remained scoreless for the rest of the tilt, however, as Rowan scored nine runs in the final three innings to take the win.
The Violets responded in a big way against the Golden Eagles with a run-rule victory.
NYU began the game by scoring four runs before an out was recorded in the top of the first.
Emily Barbire knocked in a pair of Violets on a two-run single. The inning was capped off with a
Siena Kiefer RBI single, putting NYU up 7-0.
Though SUNY Brockport got one run back in the bottom of the first, the Violets added six more in the following inning. Both Barbire and
Naya Schubel stole home in the frame.
The scoring continued for NYU with 11 runs in the final two innings, highlighted by three RBI each from Sung and Cicchetti.
Olyvia Rutter closed the door on the Golden Eagles with two shutout innings to pick up her first win of the season.
Both Sung and Cicchetti tied the program's single-game record for hits with four each.
The Violets will continue play at THE Spring Games with matchups against Hartwick College and the University of Wisconsin - River Falls tomorrow at 11:00am and 1:15pm, respectively.
