Three fencers from New York University will compete at the NCAA Fencing Championships, hosted by the University of Notre Dame from March 19-22 in South Bend, IN.
All three NCAA Divisions will be represented.
Several members of the Violets also earned recognition from the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) for their performances this season.
This year's NCAA Championships will feature a new format, as separate team champions will be crowned for the men's and women's competitions. The women will compete over the first two days, followed by the men over the final two days, with individual titles achieved in epee, foil, and saber.
Leading the NYU delegation is
Szymon Wojciechowski, who qualified in men's epee after capturing first place at the NCAA Regional Championship. He earned USFCA First Team All-Region honors.
"Szymon has put together an outstanding freshman year," said Head Coach
Ben Bratton.
Katherine Chen will compete in women's epee after finishing ninth at the regional championships. She was named USFCA Second Team All-Region.
Jerry Pan, who will represent the Violets in saber at the NCAA's, was a USFCA Division III All-Region selection.
"Katherine and Jerry have both had strong seasons, each earning USA Fencing NAC medals this season," Bratton revealed. "Jerry brings valuable experience from his previous NCAA appearance."
Several other NYU fencers earned USFCA All-Region recognition.
Jordan Macarty and
Ajit Sivakumar were named Division III All-Region in men's epee, while in men's saber,
Surya Mattoo earned Honorable Mention Division III All-Region. In men's foil,
Adam Wong and
Anup Banerjee were named Division III All-Region.
Azniv Basralian received Honorable Mention Division III All-Region, while
Lily Papadakis earned Division III All-Region honors in women's epee.
Greta Yuan and
Liisa Hambazaza were Division III All-Region in women's saber.
Wojciechowski, Pan, and Chen now look to build on their strong regional performances as they face many of the nation's top collegiate fencers in South Bend.
"It's a talented group that has shown they can compete at a very high level, and we're looking forward to seeing how they perform on the NCAA stage," Bratton added.
