The top-ranked New York University women's basketball team ended the regular season with an 80-58 win over Brandeis University on Saturday, February 28, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
It was win 87 in a row for the Violets, now one shy of the NCAA men's all-time record of 88 set by the UCLA Bruins from 1971-74.
Saturday's game was decided early as NYU raced out to a 23-2 lead and led by as many as 34, 67-33, in the second half.
The five-time defending University Athletic Association (UAA) Champions have won 53 straight UAA contests.
Caroline Peper, NYU's lone senior, was honored in a pregame ceremony. She finished with 14 points, including three three-pointers. She now has 94 this season, tied for the program record set by Lauren D'Ambrosio during the 2002-03 season.
"Pep has displayed an incredible culture of success on and off the court," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "She's been a selfless leader, challenging people, supporting people throughout her career. She has all the intangibles...and those are winning qualities."
Brooke Batchelor led the Violets with 18 points, adding six rebounds, an assist, two blocks, and three steals.
Aila Kaibara (13) and
Zahra Alexander (12) also scored in double-figures, while
Yasmene Clark grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Violets will return to action this Friday when they play in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The two-time defending National Champions will find out their opponent when the field is announced on Monday.
