Women's Basketball Victorious as NCAA Tournament Begins

Violets Defeat Maine Farmington as Win Streak Reaches 88

The two-time defending National Champion New York University women's basketball team opened NCAA Tournament play with a resounding 108-44 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Friday, March 6, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.

Already owner of the NCAA Division III women's all-time winning streak, the Violets' victory tied the NCAA men's record (at any division) of 88 set by the UCLA Bruins from 1971-74.

Maine-Farmington concludes its season at 21-8.

It was the most points ever scored by NYU in an NCAA Tournament game.

NYU (26-0) took a 9-0 lead in the game and led the entire way.

The lead expanded to 25-12 after the first quarter and increased to 53-25 at halftime.

NYU was ahead 80-34 after the third quarter and led by as many as 57 in the fourth.

"This was a complete team win," said Head Coach Meg Barber. "It was nice to see our bench getting a lot of time and getting the chance to represent NYU Basketball."

The Violets' balanced scoring was led by Brooke Batchelor, who finished with 17 points.

Caroline Peper scored 15 points, all on three-pointers. She now has 99 this season, establishing a new program record.

"This was just a normal day for me, but I'm super excited to break the record and I couldn't be prouder," Peper said.

Yasmene Clark contributed a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Olivia Lagao chipped in with 10 points and a career-high seven steals.

Aizlyn Albanese (10 points) and Alexia Mousouroulis (five assists) also recorded career bests.

"The streak is great, but the NCAA Tournament is what we are really focusing on," Barber added.

The Violets host Messiah University, a 64-58 winner over SUNY Cortland, in the NCAA Second Round on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45pm at the Paulson Center.
