The
#1-ranked New York University women's basketball team won its 83rd game in a row with a 78-51 victory over the University of Rochester on Friday, February 13, in Rochester, NY.
The night saw the Violets face their largest deficit of the season, trailing 16-7 late in the opening quarter. However, NYU outscored the Yellowjackets 45-22 in the second half and did not look back.
Rochester scored the first three buckets of the contest while the Violets remained scoreless through the game's opening three minutes. Just before the six-minute mark, however,
Caroline Peper broke the seal for NYU with a layup. In a tough shooting stretch for the Violets, the Yellowjackets held a 16-9 advantage at the end of the opening period.
Inside of the first two minutes of the second quarter, NYU scored eight straight points to jump ahead 17-16. After the Violets later opened up a 30-24 lead, Rochester answered with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to one. On the final possession of the half, Peper beat the buzzer with a made shot from beyond the arc to give NYU a four-point edge going into the locker room.
The Violets took full control of the game in the opening stages of the third frame, going on a a 15-0 run in the first five minutes to go up 48-29. Defensively, NYU held the Yellowjackets to just 2-of-15 shooting from the field in the entirety of the quarter and took a 54-34 lead heading into the final period.
Extending the gap to as much as 29 in the final 10 minutes of the game, the Violets went on to comfortably close out their 21st win of the season.
Peper notched her ninth 20-point performance of the season with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, including 5-of-12 from deep.
Yasmene Clark dominated the glass with a season-high 19 rebounds, 14 of which were offensive.
NYU is next set to play its final away game of the regular season on Sunday, February 15, against Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
