The
#22-ranked New York University men's basketball team posted a 74-63 win over University Athletic Association (UAA) foes, the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Tartans, on Sunday, February 1, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
The Violets led for all but four minutes in the win and improved to 4-3 in UAA play, 13-5 overall.
"A performance like this proves we know how to win games," said graduate forward
Luke Kolaja. "We came out a lot more intense this game than we did on Friday and played solid defense throughout."
After trading baskets in the opening minutes,
Quinn Clark drained back-to-back shots to kick-start a 7-0 run. NYU led 10-6 with just over four minutes played.
The Tartans chipped away at the NYU lead, briefly tying the game with 11 minutes to play in the first half. Kolaja re-instituted the Violet lead with seven straight points on his own, scoring on three straight possessions.
CMU used a run of their own to take their first lead since the opening minutes, scoring 12 straight and going up by six points, 29-23, with four minutes to play in the first half.
Chase Garcia came up with three-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor to put the Violets back in front, and a
Darren Rubin buzzer-beater secured a 38-33 halftime lead for the home side.
NYU made nine three-pointers in the first half, shooting 37.4% from the perimeter in the opening 20 minutes.
The Violets' offense largely worked in the paint for the second half, incrementally adding to their lead and cracking double-digits for the first time with 7:29 to play.
NYU led by as many as 15 points in the final frame.
Kolaja led the way for NYU, finishing with 23 points for his third 20+ point performance this season. He led all players with four three-pointers and two blocks.
Carnegie Johnson contributed 15 points and a game-high seven assists. Clark led the Violets with seven assists and added 15 points.
NYU returns to action on the road next weekend. The Violets face Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland on Friday, Feb. 6, at 5:30pm, before facing Carnegie Mellon agian in Pittsburgh, PA, on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
