The New York University women's tennis team launched action for the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championship on Thursday, October 1 in Saratoga, NY.
On the evening of the no-team-scoring tournament, three of the Violets' doubles pairs took the courts.
The junior duo of
Victoria Wang and
Vera Bondarenko swept their first match against Pratt Institute opponents Pallavi Verghese and Beatrice Crespo 8-0. They continued to dominate on the courts, defeating Gabriella Robinson and Elizabeth Ring from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) with a swift 8-3.
"Victoria and Vera played great in both of their matches," said Head Coach
Dillon Pottish.
"We won all of our opening doubles matches," Pottish remarked. "Today was a good day of tennis for the Violets."
In their first match, NYU's pair of
Ashley Petrauskas and
Katelyn Ho earned an 8-5 victory against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Gauri Muliyil and Julliette Ceas. Similarly,
Norah Staunton and
Emma Kast cruised to an 8-1 win against opponents Annika Cripe and Haley Peck from SUNY Oneonta.
In their second matches, both Violet pairs faced tough competition, falling to strong duos from Hamilton and Vassar College.
"We have a lot to improve on," Pottish said. "But, the team is excited to compete in singles tomorrow."
Wang and Bondarenko will play host Skidmore College for the quarterfinal round on Friday.
The Violets will open singles play and continue doubles play on day two of the ITA Regional at 9:00am on Friday, October 2, in Saratoga, NY.
