Men's Volleyball Defeats Arcadia in Four Sets

Violets Improve to 3-1

The #8-ranked New York University men's volleyball team registered a four-set win over Arcadia University on Friday, January 23, in Glenside, PA.

The Violets battled to the wire in each frame to take the match, 25-23, 28-26, 23-25, 25-18.

The score was tied 11 times in the opening set, with neither team being able to lead by more than two. With NYU leading 12-10, the Knights jumped ahead with three consecutive points.

Arcadia later took a 15-17 advantage, after which the Violets scored three straight points and did not trail for the remainder of the frame. Charles Clifford put the set away with a kill, as NYU went ahead 1-0.

In another closely contested frame, NYU got out to a 7-4 advantage in the second set. However, Arcadia managed to claw back, eventually going up 14-13.

With the score later tied 17-17, the Violets gained separation with three consecutive points. The Knights once again answered, though, as a 5-1 run put Arcadia ahead by one. Four rallies later, NYU faced set point but staved it off with a service error. 

Back-to-back kills by BoJameson Ebeling ended the frame at 28-26, giving the Violets a 2-0 set lead.

Arcadia led for much of the the third frame but was unable to extend the gap to more than three. With the Knights up 14-11, NYU flipped the scoreboard with a 6-1 run. The Violets could not capitalize on the momentum, however, eventually losing the set 25-23.

The fourth set saw NYU control much of the tempo, leading by as much as seven. Even at 13-13, the Violets broke away with five straight points. They went on to comfortably close out the frame, 25-18, to clinch the match.

Ebeling finished with 22 kills on an impressive .410 hitting to go along with two total blocks and seven digs. Devyn Nguyen spread the ball around with 51 assists, while Bennet Tchaikovsky collected 17 digs.

NYU is scheduled for another away match in its next contest, as it takes on Hunter College on Tuesday, January 27, at 6:00pm in New York, NY.
