The
#3-ranked New York University women's swimming and diving team registered an impressive performance at its tri-meet, defeating both #5 defending National Champion Massachusetts Institute of Technology and #8 Williams College on Friday, January 23, in Cambridge, MA.
The Violets won by scores of 159-141 and 170-128 over MIT and Williams, respectively.
"Beating the defending NCAA Champions in a meet like this says a lot about the character of this group," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "We were down early, but the women never panicked, kept racing, and trusted the process. The way they closed it out in the 200 free relay was exactly what championship teams do."
The day was highlighted by six first-place finishes for NYU, five of which were individual.
In a photo finish in the 200-yard freestyle,
Llew Ladomirak and
Kaley McIntyre tied for first place with a time of 1:52.13.
Sammy Wong narrowly took the top finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.72. She was 0.16 seconds in front of second place.
With a time of 2:03.12,
Nicole Ranile earned another individual win in the 200-yard butterfly.
Aanya Wala was the final individual winner of the afternoon with a time of 5:00.97 in the 500-yard freestyle.
"Aanya was phenomenal today," explained Miele. "Winning both the 500 and the 1650 with NCAA cuts in a meet of this magnitude is special, and it set the tone for the entire squad. Performances like that elevate everyone around her."
In the 200-yard freestyle relay,
Lian Jeong Engle,
Maeve O'Donnell, Ladomirak, and McIntyre combined to earn first place with a time of 1:33.25.
The Violets also competed in the diving portion of the meet.
Maya Williams and
Meera Kasturi finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, in both the one and three-meter dive.
While the swimmers will not compete again until the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, the divers will take part in the Ithaca College Invitational on Sunday, January 25, in Ithaca, NY.
