Second Half Surge Propels Men’s Basketball to First UAA Win

Violets Outscore Rochester by 20 Points in Final Frame

The New York University men's basketball team recorded its first University Athletic Association (UAA) win of the season on Friday, January 16, defeating the University of Rochester Yellowjackets 66-54.at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan. 

Five Violets finished in double-figure scoring in the win, led by Carnegie Johnson with 15 points.

The UAA foes traded blows throughout the majority of the first half, totaling 18 lead changes in the first 20 minutes. Rochester pushed ahead in the final four minutes of the half with a 12-0 run that gave the visiting Yellowjackets a 32-24 halftime lead. 

NYU's first-half shooting struggles did not follow them after halftime as the Violets regained the lead, 34-32, on a 10-0 run to open the second frame. 

The hosts held Rochester to just 22 points on seven made field goals in the second half and NYU ultimately scored a 66-54 win. 

Johnson led all scorers with 15 points, adding a team-high three steals. 

Bryan Moussako contributed 13 points and four assists. 

Darius Gakwasi finished with 12 points in his first start for the Violets, adding seven rebounds and two steals. 

Luke Kolaja and Darren Rubin each totaled 11 points. 

The Violets finish out their first home UAA weekend on Sunday, January 18 with a 2:00 p.m. match-up with Emory University for Alumni Day. The team will hold an alumni game at 9:30 a.m.
