Women’s Soccer Completes Homestand Sweep, Defeats Sarah Lawrence

Violets Have Won Their Last Four Matches

The New York University women's soccer team completed a perfect week of home matches on Sunday afternoon, as the Violets defeated Sarah Lawrence, 2-0, at Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.

NYU dominated the possession battle for the majority of the first half, managing 18 shots and 10 shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. Gryphons' keeper Bella Vaca finished the opening period with nine saves.

The Violets went ahead in the 32nd minute after maintaining possession on an unsuccessful corner kick. Leah Berg received the ball at the top of the box, curling it perfectly into the top right corner to beat the keeper.

The goal is Berg's first of her college career, and gave NYU a 1-0 lead.

The hosts added to that lead just three minutes into the second half when Sarah Lawrence's Chloe Barker was called for a foul in the 18-yard box, earning NYU a penalty shot. Alexa Buxbaum stepped up to the spot and converted in the bottom-right corner for her fourth goal of the season, giving her side a 2-0 advantage.

Just as they did against William Paterson on Wednesday night, NYU's Mia Capo and Maddy Tohanczyn shared goalkeeper duties recording the team's fifth clean sheet of the season. Capo did not have to make a save in her 62 minutes of work on Sunday afternoon, while Tohanczyn made one save in 28 minutes in net.

The Violets improve to 6-1-1 on the season, winning their third of three home matches in the calendar week and fourth consecutive match overall.

NYU returns to action on Wednesday, September 24, against John Jay College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. from Field 10 on Randall's Island.
