The New York University women's soccer team
defeated #23 Vassar College 2-1 on Saturday, September 20, at Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.
The Violets (5-1-1) never trailed in the contest and held on to beat the Brewers (6-2) with a dominant performance on both sides.
NYU got the first shot of the game in the third minute and the first shot on goal in the fifth, when
Sonia Neighbors forced the Vassar goalie to make a save and gave the Violets a corner.
The Violets also scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute courtesy of captain
Rena Kalargiros, with an assist from
Sydney Freese. The ball bounced favorably to Kalargiros, and she buried it in the bottom corner.
Vassar did not get its first shot of the match until the 29th minute, as the Violets defense held tight. The Violets ended the first half with five shots on goal and nine corners, but were unable to get past the Vassar goalkeeper again in the first half.
It only took eight minutes into the second half for the Violets to score their second goal, this time from
Marlee Scanlon, with Freese getting her second assist of the game. Scanlon received the ball in the box and curled it into the opposite corner past the goalkeeper.
The last score of the game came from Vassar in the 83rd minute, but they were unable to equalize as the NYU defense stood tall and denied multiple chances in the final minutes.
"I'm proud of the team and the energy of the entire group," said Head Coach
Scott Waddell. "Vassar is always a competitive game and they pushed us in the second half. That's a very good win for us."
The Violets out-shot the Brewers 24-6, 11-2 on goal. NYU also dominated in corners, with 10 compared to Vassar's three.
The Violets return to the pitch against Sarah Lawrence at home on Sunday, September 21, back at Lubetkin Field. Kickoff is set for 4:30pm.
