One week removed from its last contest, the New York University women's soccer team returned to the field with a dominant 5-0 win over William Paterson University on Wednesday, September 17, at Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.
In the victory, the Violets set their program's single-game shots record with 56, surpassing the previous high of 47.
With under eight minutes remaining in the first half, a cross into the box by
Leah Berg found
Marlee Scanlon, who then made a quick pass to
Julia Spang. Spang promptly buried her shot for the match's first goal.
Five minutes into the second half, passes from both
Sydney Freese and
Carmen Cicerini led to a goal by
Sari Frankl.
In the 62nd minute,
Annabelle Booker crossed a ball across the face of the net, which
Yukino Wakatsuki put a foot on and scored.
Scanlon went on to score each of the team's final two goals, including an unassisted one from almost 20 yards out in the 70th minute.
"I thought we played well for the entirety of the game," said Head Coach
Scott Waddell. "In the first half, we didn't score quite as many goals, but we created chances and we were pushing the ball. It was good to get more goals in the second half."
NYU faced just two shots on the night, neither of which were on goal.
Mia Capo and
Maddy Tohanczyn split time in net to combine for the shutout.
"It was good to get five goals and always good to get on the score sheet," added Waddell. "Five isn't a bad number."
The Violets will remain at home for back-to-back match-ups against Vassar College and Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
