Violets Drop Rain-Soaked UAA Softball Doubleheader to WashU

Game One Suspended Saturday Afternoon Due To Weather

The New York University softball team closed out its University Athletic Association (UAA) four-game series against WashU with a rain-suspended doubleheader on Sunday, April 6.

WashU scored wins in both games, 4-3, 8-1, on Sunday to complete the weekend sweep.

The Violets and Bears completed two and a half innings of game one on Saturday afternoon before the game was suspended due to rain and field conditions.

Olyvia Rutter pitched three hitless innings to start the first game. The Violets took a 2-0 lead when Olivia de Hesselle connected for a hard grounder into shallow center field with runners on second and third.

After a 17-hour delay, WashU batted in the bottom of the third inning. The Bears took the lead on back-to-back outfield shots, taking a 3-2 advantage in the return to play.

WashU doubled its lead, 4-2, in the second inning after the runner at third base stole home during a pickoff attempt.

After entering in the fifth inning, Marina Egbert pitched the final three innings allowing just one earned run and four hits.

The Violets clawed back a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when first-year catcher Naya Schubel delivered a towering shot over the left field wall for her first career home run. The homer pulled NYU within one run of the visitors, 4-3.

Victoria Negron opened up the top of the seventh inning with her first hit of the game as the Violets eyed a late-game comeback. Despite advancing to second base, neither of the final two NYU batters could drive Negron in.

WashU took game one with a 4-3 victory. The Bears' Maria Brooks scored the complete game win, recording eight strikeouts and allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

The WashU bats stayed hot into game two. After consecutive singles, Harper Nix drove a ball to left center field that was misplayed, allowing two WashU runs to score. Their 2-0 lead held for three-and-a-half innings.

NYU broke the scoring drought in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Karleigh Kluever stepped in with a pinch-hit single with two runners on and two outs. Alyssa Quary scored from third base, but WashU ended the inning by throwing out Schubel, who attempted to advance from second base to third.

WashU broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on five hits to take an 8-1 advantage.

That lead held through the final out to secure WashU the win in game two.

NYU travels to Cleveland, OH for a three-game series with UAA foe Case Western Reserve, beginning Friday, April 11.
