The New York University men's tennis team battled hard but came up short in a 4–1 loss to No. 4-ranked University of Chicago in the semifinals of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday, April 26, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.
Chicago struck first by taking the doubles point, winning two of three matches. Boren Zheng and Philip Martin fell 6–3 at No. 1 doubles, while Alex Lee and Bryan Hui narrowly lost 7–6 at No. 3. NYU's bright spot in doubles came at No. 2, where Jingyuan Chen and Louis Frowein picked up a 7–5 win.
In singles play, Cooper Kline dropped a 6–1, 6–1 match at No. 6 to extend Chicago's lead. Chen fell 6–2, 6–4 at No. 3 singles, and Hui was edged out 7–6, 6–2 at No. 4 as the Maroons clinched the match.
Frowein scored NYU's lone point, winning 6–4, 6–3 at No. 5 singles.
Matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles went unfinished with Zheng and Martin both battling into third sets.
With the loss, NYU moves into the third-place match of the UAA Championship. The Violets will return to action when they face Emory University in the third-place match on Sunday at 8:30am.
