The New York University women's tennis team began competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Thursday, April 24, in Altamonte Springs, FL.
Seeded #6 in the eight-team tournament, the Violets faced #3 Carnegie Mellon University and were defeated 4-0.
The first match completed was at #2 doubles where NYU's
Jimena Menendez and
Emma Kast fell 6-1.
The #3 doubles' tilt was more competitive, but the Violets'
Norah Staunton and
Hannah Chang still fell short 6-3.
NYU's #1 team of
Isabella Hartman and
Siona Vallabhaneni was locked in a 4-4 tie, but the match was not completed once the Tartans secured the doubles point.
In singles, only three matches were played to completion, all won by Carnegie Mellon.
At #2, Hartman was defeated 6-1, 6-1, Staunton fell at #5 6-1, 6-2, and Vallabhaneni lost at #6 6-1, 6-1.
"We got off to a nervous start, which is understandable," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We were able to reverse the momentum in a couple of singles matches, but CMU did a good job of building off the doubles."
Menendez (#1 singles) and Chang (#3) were ahead in their matches when play was halted.
"The UAA is the strongest conference in the country," Choy added. "There are no easy matches."
The Violets will now face #7 Brandeis University on Friday at 12:30pm.
