The New York University softball team hosted Carnegie Mellon University for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 19, in the Bronx, NY.
After dropping Game 1 of the University Athletic Association (UAA) match-up 11-0, the Violets rebounded for a 12-11 victory in Game 2.
NYU was held to four hits in the opener, all singles from
Siena Kiefer,
Alyssa Quary,
Karleigh Kluever, and
Claire Carson.
Carnegie Mellon scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second and four more in the fourth to secure the win.
Olyvia Rutter started and suffered the loss for the Violets.
NYU's offense woke up In the second game, scoring runs in each of the four four innings and taking a commanding 10-1 lead...or so it seemed.
Carnegie Mellon mounted a tremendous comeback, scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull within a run and then scoring two more in the sixth to take an 11-10 lead.
However, the Violets would not be denied this victory, as
Nicole Cicchetti's RBI single tied the game in the bottom of the frame.
Then, after holding the Tartans scoreless in the top of the seventh,
Caroline Hofmann produced a walk-off single as the Violets snapped their 10-game losing streak.
Victoria Negron had two hits (a home run and double) and knocked in four runs. Cicchetti and Quarry also had a pair of hits and drove in three runs each, while Hofmann also collected a pair of hits.
Kluever picked up the victory with three innings of relief, allowing only one earned run.
The Violets are back in action next weekend when they travel to Atlanta, GA, for a three-game series against Emory University.
