Baseball Hosts WashU for UAA Doubleheader

Violets Drop Both Ends of Twinbill

The New York University baseball team hosted Washington University in St. Louis for a doubleheader on Friday, April 11, at Staten Island Hospital Community Park on Staten Island, NY.

The Violets (17-11, 3-7 ) dropped the first game of the University Athletic Association (UAA) twinbill 13-6 and fell to the Bears (15-12, 4-6) 6-4 in the nitecap.

NYU fell behind 3-0 in the opener, but rallied to pull with 4-3 following single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

However, a six-run top of the eighth by the Bears put the game away.

The Violets' offense featured two hits from Kosta Mocklis and a two-run home run from CJ Franchini, his first as a collegian.

Jonathan Hyman pitched well for the Violets, going seven innings, striking out eight and allowing only three earned runs.

In the second game, WashU plated three runs in the top of the first and the Violets never recovered.

The Bears increased their lead to 5-1 before the Violets got a run back in the bottom of the eighth.

WashU added their final run in the top of the ninth for a 6-2 lead. Then, in the bottom of the frame, the Violets got two runs back and had the bases loaded with two outs, but could not complete the comeback.

Franchini added three hits and scored three runs in the nitecap, while Nate Pallotta reached base four times with two hits and two walks.

Antonio Turco-Rivas started for NYU and went four innings. He only allowed one earned run, but suffered the loss.

The two squads will return to Staten Island for another doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 10:00am.
