The New York University softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader against the Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday, April 1, in Hoboken, NJ.
The Violets were walked off in extra innings in game one, 5-4, prior to falling 3-1 in game two.
NYU got on the board first in the day's opening contest, as an
Emily Barbire groundout brought home
Alyssa Quary in the top of the first.
After Stevens evened the score in the bottom of the second, both teams were held scoreless for the next three innings.
With two outs and runners on second and third base in the top of the sixth,
Karleigh Kluever broke the tie with a two-run double down the right field line. However, the Ducks answered immediately with two runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Tied 4-4 through seven innings, the game went into extra innings.
In the top of the ninth,
Emma Aridi knocked in the go-ahead run with an RBI sacrifice fly.
The Violets were unable to hold on to the lead, though, as Stevens registered a pair of base hits in the bottom half of the inning to score both the tying and winning run.
Olyvia Rutter earned a no-decision in the start after tossing five innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out two batters.
Game two saw NYU score first once again, as Quary plated
Siena Kiefer on an RBI sacrifice pop up.
After the Violets kept the Ducks scoreless through the first three stanzas, Stevens scored one run each in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
Down 3-1 in the top of the seventh, NYU brought the tying run to the plate but could not convert, thus ending the game.
Despite the loss, Kluever (5-5) threw a complete game and allowed three earned runs while striking out five batters.
The Violets will next host a University Athletic Association (UAA) series against Washington University in St. Louis from Friday to Saturday, April 4-5, at Bahoshy Field in Bronx, NY. Friday is set to be a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 5:00pm.
