The New York University softball team opened its 2025 season at the Triangle Collegiate Softball Classic hosted by William Peace University on Friday, March 7.
NYU began play with games vs. Mary Washington and The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in Raleigh, NC, and suffered two tough losses. The Violets lost the opener 5-4 to Mary Washington, and then fell to TCNJ 1-0.
In the first game, NYU fell behind 1-0 in the first inning. The Violets'
Emily Barbire hit her first career home run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1. After Mary Washington went ahead 3-1,
Victoria Negron's sacrifice fly in the sixth cut NYU's deficit to score 3-2.
The Eagles tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh, but again the Violets rallied in the bottom of the frame off of some nifty base running, scoring two more runs.
Ultimately, the rally fell one run short.
Jessie Werthman, although stuck with the loss, pitched very well, allowing only two earned runs in five innings.
Olyvia Rutter made her collegiate debut, coming in for relief for the last two innings and striking out three batters and not allowing an earned run.
Offensively, both
Claire Carson and
Nicole Cicchetti tallied two hits in the game. A total of six different players recorded a hit.
In the second game, the Violets received a pitching gem from
Karleigh Kluever. She pitched all six innings, giving up no earned runs.
TCNJ scored the game's only run on an error in the fifth inning.
Offensively,
Siena Kiefer went 2-2, and both
Emma Aridi and
Naya Schubel added hits.
The Violets return to the field tomorrow with two more games in the 2025 Triangle Collegiate Softball Classic vs Averett University at 2:30pm and Christopher Newport University at 5:00pm.
