The New York University baseball team played its first two University Athletic Association (UAA) games of the season, facing Emory University in a doubleheader on Friday, March 28, in Atlanta, GA.
The Violets fell 12-9 in the day's opening game before getting edged out 10-9 in the backend of the doubleheader.
Down 1-0 in the top of the fourth of game one,
Kosta Mocklis put the first run on the board for NYU with a solo home run to left field.
Max Oliveira,
CJ Franchini, and
Cam Dunn each recorded an RBI in the inning as well to give the Violets a 4-1 lead.
After the Eagles got one run back in the bottom half of the frame, they evened the score by bringing two more runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth.
Dunn briefly put the Violets back in front in the top of the sixth with another RBI, but Emory drove home three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-5 edge.
Though NYU managed to tie the game in the seventh with a pair of runs, the Eagles added two to their own tally in the same inning.
Later down 12-8 in the top of the ninth, each of the first three batters in the frame reached base safely for the Violets, bringing the tying up run to the plate with nobody out. However, NYU failed to bring another run across, ending the game.
In another offensive battle, the Violets found themselves down 5-0 after the first inning of game two.
NYU then rallied in the top of the third with each of the first six different batters reaching base safely, five of whom scored. A
Jack Kelman bunt brought in a sixth run to put the Violets ahead, 6-5.
The Eagles tied the game with a run in the bottom of the frame, followed by a run each in the fifth and sixth innings to jump back on top, 8-6.
With runners on first and second and one out in the top of the seventh, Franchini singled to right field to cut the deficit to one. In the next at-bat, Kelman plated a run on a fielder's choice to even the score. Two batters later,
Dakota Barbet knocked in Kelman with a single to give the Violets the lead again.
Emory responded once more, scoring two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh, which proved to be the final runs of the day.
Down to its final gasp, NYU had runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the ninth. Unable to convert, however, the Violets dropped the second game of the day.
In a no-decision,
Antonio Turco-Rivas struck out five hitters in 3.1 innings of work. Barbet and Franchini each registered a multi-hit game in both contests of the doubleheader. Dunn combined to hit 4-for-9 with two RBI and a run scored on the day.
NYU will close out its series against the Eagles tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00pm.
