The New York University softball team closed the weekend with a doubleheader vs the St. Joseph's University Brooklyn Bears on Sunday, March 23, at Bahosy Field on the campus of Fordham University in The Bronx.
After a 11-0 run-rule-abbreviated game one, the Violets faced an early deficit against the Bears before losing 7-4 in the second game.
GAME ONE: NYU 11 | SJBK 0 (F/5)
The Violets opened the scoring with a pair of RBI singles by Victoria Negron and Olivia De Hesselle in the bottom of the second inning.
Olyvia Rutter was relieved of her duties in the circle for NYU after three scoreless innings, allowing just three hits.
NYU did the bulk of its offensive damage in the third inning, scoring six of its 11 runs. Claire Carson took advantage of loaded bases and drove a single into shallow center field, scoring Alyssa Quary and Nicole Cicchetti.
De Hesselle added to the run total two batters later, doubling to center with bases loaded and scoring Claire Carson and Emily Barbire.
The Violets got their third two-RBI hit with the next batter, as Naya Schubel stretched a drive down the right field line into a triple. She scored De Hesselle and Victoria Negron.
NYU capped the offensive barrage with six runs on five hits in the third inning, leading 8-0 at the end of the frame.
Pinch hitters Marina Egbert, Zuly Henriquez and Alexa Very all hit RBI singles in the fourth inning, pushing the Violet lead to 11-0.
Monique Kamrowski finished the game out for the Violets, pitching two scoreless innings with one strikeout and allowing two hits. The game was called after the top of the fifth inning with the run-rule enacted.
GAME TWO SJBK 7 | NYU 4
The second game was not as successful, as St. Joseph's scored a run in the first inning and added four more in the top of the second to take an early 5-0 lead.
The Violets battled back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 5-2. Singles from De Hesselle and Schubel scored both runs.
Kamrowski got the start in the second game, but only lasted 1 2/3 innings. Jessie Werthman came in for relief, going 2 1/3 inning, not allowing an earned run. Karleigh Kluever came in for the remaining three innings, striking out two and only allowing one run.
The Violets' offense was quiet until the sixth, when Schubel hit another RBI single, scoring De Hesselle. The offense got one final run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Carson.
"I was impressed with our offensive effort in the first game," said Head Coach Nicole Bellini. "Our pitchers threw outs in both games, but we need to be able close the door down the stretch as we get closer to conference play."
NYU returns to action on Wednesday, March 26, as they travel to play a doubleheader against Farmingdale State University. The games will be held at Farmingdale, NY, starting at 3:30pm.
