Violets Defeat Assumption 5-2

The New York men's tennis team played its first home dual match of the 2024-25 season and defeated Assumption University 5-2 on Sunday, March 2, and the Stadium Tennis Club in Bronx, NY.

The Violets set the tone early by winning two of three doubles matches. Philip Martin and Boren Zheng earned a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Bryan Hui and Jingyuan Chen picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2. Alex Lee and Ryan Lyn fell at No. 3 doubles, but the Violets secured the doubles point.

In singles play, Zheng controlled his match at No. 1, winning 6-2, 6-1. Chen followed with a strong 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2. Hui (No. 3) battled through a three-set thriller and prevailed, winning 7-6 (6), 5-7, 10-7.

Ryan Shayani (No. 4) and Cooper Kline (No. 5) both fought hard, but came up short in their matches. Zachary Freier (No. 6) delivered a strong performance, winning 6-3, 7-5 to cap off the Violets' victory.

"The team earned this hard-fought win, securing the doubles point and producing strong singles' performances, including Zach's comeback to clinch the match," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "With momentum building, we look ahead to key regional match-ups against RIT and Hobart."

The Violets return to the court next Saturday, March 8, when they host RIT back at the Stadium Tennis Club. First serves are set for 1:00pm.
