Baseball Sweeps City College in Dominant Doubleheader Performance

Violets Explode Offensively to Sweep Beavers

The New York University baseball team extended its win streak to six with a doubleheader sweep of the City College of New York on Saturday, March 15, at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park in Staten Island, NY.

Jonathan Hyman (2-2) pitched a gem in game one, allowing just one hit and striking out seven over six shutout innings, before the bullpen closed out the 12-0 victory.

The Violets wasted no time taking control. Connor Roggero opened the scoring with a two-run single. CJ Franchini followed with a three-run double to cap off the five-run first inning.

NYU added a run in the fourth when Kosta Mocklis scored on a wild pitch.

A six-run fifth inning put the game out of reach. Cam Dunn delivered an RBI single, and an error allowed Harrison Blueweiss to score. Mocklis delivered a three-run homer, and Franchini capped the scoring with an RBI single, driving in Roggero to sealing the win.

In game two, the Violets scored once in each of the first two innings, with Nate Pallotta and Dakota Barbet each recording an RBI.

In the top of the fourth, the Beavers cut the deficit in half after a balk allowed a run to score. CCNY then tied the game in the top of the sixth following a two-out RBI double.

However, NYU quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning with four runs. After Pallotta drew a leadoff walk, Bobby Kuenzler came in to pinch run for him. Kuenzler later stole second before coming home on a Roggero RBI single. After Roggero stole second and Max Oliveira walked, Franchini and Barbet collected back-to-back hits to bring in two more runs. The rally was capped off by a Blueweiss RBI sacrifice fly.

Though the Beavers got one run back in the top of the seventh, the Violets scored seven more runs in the bottom of the frame to end the game in a run rule. The first two at-bats of the inning both led to extra-bases, including a two-run home run by Aidan Howladar, who pinch hit for Kuenzler. Each of the next four batters reached base safely, highlighted by a two-run Franchini single to extend the lead to 10-3. Blueweiss added on with a sacrifice fly to make it 11-3. With the bases later loaded, an error and a Howladar groundout ended the game at 13-3.

Aidan Pawlak (3-1) earned the win with one earned run through 5.2 innings and 10 strikeouts.

The Violets will return to action on Tuesday, March 18, when they travel to Montclair, NJ, to take on Montclair State University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm.
